Backflow Prevention Testing Bay Area

A backflow preventer is a one-way valve assembly installed where a property’s plumbing connects to the public water supply — commonly on irrigation systems, fire sprinklers, and commercial buildings with certain equipment. If pressure in the system drops, such as during a water main break, a backflow preventer stops contaminated water from a property’s plumbing from being pulled backward into the public supply by only allowing water to flow in one direction.

The internal components of a backflow assembly — springs, seals, check valves — wear out over time, and a failed assembly may not show any obvious symptoms until it’s tested. That’s why most Bay Area water districts require annual testing, with results filed directly with the district by the tester. Missing a testing deadline can result in a notice from your water district or, in some cases, water service restrictions until it’s resolved.

Testing takes a gauge reading at the assembly to confirm both check valves and the relief valve are holding pressure correctly. If the assembly passes, we file the certification with your water district on your behalf. If it fails, we can typically repair or replace the assembly on the spot and retest, rather than leaving you to schedule a second visit.
