A ductless multi-zone system pairs one outdoor compressor with two to eight indoor units, each controlling its own zone independently — a common setup for additions, converted garages, and ADUs where extending existing ductwork isn’t practical, or for homeowners who want every bedroom on its own thermostat. Because there’s no ductwork to lose energy through, ductless systems are also one of the more efficient ways to add or replace HVAC capacity.

If a home already has central ductwork, a zoned system adds motorized dampers and zone controls so different areas — upstairs vs. downstairs, for example — can run at different temperatures from the same central equipment. This is often the more practical option for a home that already has good ductwork but uneven comfort between floors or additions.

Multi-zone installation is a design problem before it’s an installation one: each zone needs a load calculation so the right-size indoor unit goes in the right room, and the outdoor unit needs to be sized for the combined load of every zone running at once — not just added up from generic room sizes.
