How Trenchless Directional Drilling Works
The HDD Process: Bore, Ream, Pull
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) starts with a pilot bore — a small-diameter guided drill head that follows a precise underground path from entry point to exit point. Once the pilot bore is complete, progressively larger reamers widen the hole to the diameter needed for your pipe or conduit. On the final pass, the pipe or conduit is pulled back through the bore. The result is a fully installed utility run with no open trench.
What Utilities Can Be Bored
We bore electrical conduit — including high-amperage runs for EV chargers, outbuildings, and commercial feeds — as well as water and plumbing supply lines, gas lines, fiber and telecom conduit, and sewer or storm drain pipe. If multiple utilities need to run the same path, we can sometimes combine them in a single bore to reduce cost and disruption.
Bay Area Soil & Site Conditions
East Bay clay soils require different tooling than the sandy fill common near the Bay shoreline, and rocky terrain on hillside properties demands hardened drill heads and slower advance rates. Trenchless vs. Open Trenching
Open trenching is sometimes the right call — for very shallow runs, in areas with no surface improvements, or when multiple utilities need to be accessed along the length of the run. But for most residential and commercial jobs involving driveways, lawns, pavement, or landscaped areas, trenchless directional boring is faster, cleaner, and less expensive when you factor in surface restoration costs.

Before any bore starts, we coordinate with 811 (Call Before You Dig) to get existing underground utilities located and marked. In areas requiring higher precision — near gas mains, high-voltage lines, or fiber trunks — we pothole to visually confirm depths. We don't guess what's in the ground.
Wire Pull & Pipe Connection
After the conduit or pipe is in the ground, we pull the wire, make the terminations, pressure-test water or gas lines, and hand the completed installation off to you. One crew handles everything from bore to finish — no coordinating with separate electricians or plumbers.
Permits & As-Built Documentation
Most underground utility installations require permits. We pull the permits, schedule inspections, and get the sign-off. At job completion we provide as-built documentation showing the bore path and depth — useful for future work and required by some jurisdictions.
