
Pipe bursting replaces a damaged or undersized underground pipe — most commonly a sewer lateral — by pulling a bursting head through the old pipe to fracture it outward while simultaneously pulling a new pipe into place behind it, all without digging an open trench along the pipe’s length. After locating and exposing the pipe at each end — entry and exit pits, not a full trench — we pull a bursting head, sized larger than the existing pipe, through the old line. The head fractures the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil while a new, continuous pipe is pulled in directly behind it. The result is a same-size or larger-diameter replacement pipe with only two small excavation points instead of a trench the full length of the run.
Traditional sewer replacement means trenching the entire length of the line, tearing up whatever’s above it — driveway, landscaping, sometimes a section of street. Pipe bursting avoids that by working from two access points, which is why it’s often faster and less expensive overall once surface restoration costs are factored in, especially on longer runs or runs under hardscape.
Pipe bursting works well when the existing pipe’s alignment is basically sound and the main problem is the pipe material itself — deteriorated clay or cast iron, root intrusion, or a line that’s simply undersized for current needs. It’s not always the right fit for a severely offset or collapsed line, or where the bursting force could damage nearby utilities. We do a camera inspection first to confirm it’s a good candidate before recommending it over open trenching or pipe lining.
Pipe bursting fractures the old pipe outward and pulls a new pipe in behind it, giving you a full-strength new pipe at the same or larger diameter. Pipe lining instead inserts a liner inside the existing pipe, which is a different technique better suited to certain pipe conditions.
