Level 1, 2 & 3 Charging Explained

Level 1 charging uses a standard 120V outlet and adds roughly 3-5 miles of range per hour — fine for a plug-in hybrid or light daily driving, but slow for a full EV. Level 2 charging runs on a dedicated 240V circuit, similar to an electric dryer outlet, and delivers 20-40+ miles of range per hour, which is what most homeowners install.

Level 3, or DC fast charging, delivers power directly as DC current at much higher output, cutting charge time to minutes rather than hours. It requires 3-phase or high-capacity electrical service and is typically installed for commercial, fleet, or multi-family locations rather than single-family homes.

What a Home Installation Involves

We start by checking your panel's available capacity — a 40-50 amp Level 2 charger circuit is a meaningful load, and older 100-amp panels often need a panel upgrade to support it alongside existing appliances. From there we run the circuit, mount the charger at your preferred location — garage, driveway, or carport — and pull the required permit.

Most straightforward Level 2 installations are completed in a single day, assuming the existing panel has the capacity to support the new circuit.

Commercial & Multi-Family Charging

Commercial properties, fleets, and apartment or condo buildings have different needs: multiple charging stations, load management across circuits so the building's total service isn't overloaded, and in some cases Level 3 DC fast charging infrastructure.
